Is Your Child Struggling More Than They Should Be?

You've been told it's ADHD. Or maybe you're still trying to understand why your bright, loving child can't sit still, can't focus, melts down over small things, or struggles to get through a school day without falling apart.

You may have tried dietary changes, omega-3s, screen limits — and seen some improvement, but nothing that lasts. Or perhaps you're looking for a natural approach before considering medication, or something to support your child alongside what they're already doing.

What often goes unasked is: why is this child's nervous system so dysregulated? What is their gut doing? And is there something deeper driving these patterns?

These are the questions naturopathic care begins with.

Could It Be More Than ADHD? The PANS/PANDAS Overlap

Some children whose symptoms look like ADHD — especially those with sudden onset, episodic worsening, or symptoms that appeared after an illness — may have an overlapping immune-mediated condition called PANS or PANDAS.

PANS (Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) involves immune dysregulation that directly affects the brain, producing symptoms that can include sudden inattention, emotional outbursts, sensory sensitivity, sleep disruption, anxiety and regression.

Key signs that PANS/PANDAS may be contributing include:

  • Symptoms appeared suddenly, often after a cold, flu or strep infection

  • There are episodic flares — periods when symptoms significantly worsen

  • OCD-like behaviours, tics or sudden anxiety alongside attention challenges

  • Symptoms improve when the child is healthy and worsen when unwell

If this pattern sounds familiar, a careful clinical assessment can help identify whether immune support and nervous system care should be part of your child's plan.

A Structured, Gentle Approach to Understanding Your Child

At Botanic Artisan, I work with families to identify the specific physiological drivers behind your child's attention and behaviour challenges — and to create a realistic, sustainable plan that supports long-term change.

Step 1 — Deep Assessment Your initial 90-minute consultation explores your child's full health history, including birth history, early illnesses and infections, gut symptoms, sleep patterns, emotional regulation, diet, immune health and any relevant testing. I listen carefully to your story, because patterns matter.

Step 2 — Functional Testing (Where Relevant) Where standard tests have been inconclusive or haven't captured the full picture, functional testing can provide valuable insight. Options may include microbiome analysis, organic acids testing (assessing neurotransmitter pathways and mitochondrial function), HTMA (hair tissue mineral analysis for mineral status and toxic load), and immune and inflammatory markers.

Testing is always discussed transparently — it is never routine, and always chosen because it will meaningfully guide your child's care.

Step 3 — Personalised Treatment Plan Your child's plan integrates herbal medicine, targeted nutritional support, dietary guidance and nervous system regulation strategies — tailored to their specific drivers, your family's rhythm, and what is realistic and sustainable in daily life.

Step 4 — Ongoing Support Regular follow-up consultations allow the plan to evolve as your child responds. Progress is tracked, adjustments are made, and you always have clarity about what we are working on and why.

ADHD Isn't Just a Brain Problem

For many children, what looks like ADHD on the surface has deeper physiological drivers that aren't being addressed.

In clinical practice, the most common contributing factors include:

Gut-Brain Dysregulation The gut and brain communicate constantly through the vagus nerve, immune signalling and neurotransmitter production. When gut bacteria are imbalanced, intestinal permeability is increased, or nutrient absorption is compromised, the brain's ability to regulate attention, mood and impulse control is directly affected. Many children with ADHD patterns show significant improvements when gut health is properly supported.

Inflammation and Immune Activation Low-grade inflammation — often driven by gut imbalance, food sensitivities, chronic infections or environmental load — can impair neurological function, increase sensory sensitivity, and make emotional regulation far harder for a child's developing nervous system.

Nutrient Deficiencies Iron, zinc, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins are all critical for healthy brain function and nervous system regulation. Deficiencies in these nutrients — which are common and often missed on standard blood tests — can significantly worsen attention, impulse control and emotional stability.

Nervous System Dysregulation Some children are in a near-constant state of stress response — hyper-aroused, reactive, and struggling to settle. This isn't a behaviour problem. It's a nervous system that has learned to stay on high alert, often due to early immune stress, gut imbalance, or ongoing physiological load.

When these underlying drivers are identified and gently supported, many children begin to feel calmer, more focused, and more like themselves.

This Support May Be Right For Your Child If…

  • Your child has been diagnosed with ADHD and you're exploring natural or complementary support

  • You're concerned about attention, focus or impulse control but haven't yet sought a diagnosis

  • Your child's symptoms appeared suddenly or worsen episodically — and you're wondering if something immune-related is involved

  • Previous dietary changes or supplements have helped partially but not fully

  • Your child struggles with emotional regulation, sensory sensitivity, sleep or gut symptoms alongside attention challenges

  • You want a thorough, personalised assessment rather than a one-size-fits-all approach

FAQ

How is natural ADHD treatment different from medication? Naturopathic care doesn't replace medical treatment — it works alongside it, or as a first step for families exploring natural approaches. The focus is on identifying and addressing the physiological drivers behind your child's symptoms: gut health, nutrient status, inflammation, nervous system regulation and immune load. Many families use naturopathic care alongside conventional management for a more complete picture.

How long before we see improvements? Many families notice early changes in sleep, gut function or emotional regulation within the first four to eight weeks. Deeper and more sustained changes in attention and focus typically develop over three to six months, as the underlying drivers are gradually addressed. Every child is different, and progress is tracked closely throughout.

Do you work with children who are already on ADHD medication? Yes. Naturopathic care can safely complement existing medication. Supporting gut health, nutrient status and nervous system regulation can help children on medication respond better, and in some cases — always in consultation with their prescribing doctor — families find they need less over time.

What age children do you work with? I work with school-aged children through to teenagers. Treatment is always adapted to your child's developmental stage, individual needs and your family's capacity.

Do I need a referral? No referral is needed. You can book directly online. Starting with a free 20-minute discovery call is recommended so we can ensure naturopathic care is the right fit before committing to a full consultation.
