When Your Child Changes Overnight: A Gentle Naturopathic Approach to PANS in Children

Children’s Health • Behaviour & Mood • Immune System Support

What Is PANS?

PANS (Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) is a condition in which children suddenly develop symptoms such as anxiety, OCD behaviours, tics, emotional changes, or sensory sensitivities, often following infection or immune activation. Increasing evidence suggests inflammation affecting the basal ganglia may disrupt emotional regulation, behaviour, and neurological signalling in the developing brain.

I’ll never forget the mum who sat across from me, visibly shaken. “Something’s happened to my son,” she said. “It’s like he woke up one day… and he was a different child.”

Her once confident, creative boy had started refusing to go to school. He was washing his hands until they were raw. Crying if his shoelaces weren’t tied just right. His handwriting, once neat and proud had suddenly become messy. Teachers were calling home, saying he couldn’t concentrate, and he’d started getting into trouble for things that would never have bothered him before.

Then came the tics, sharp, repetitive movements in his eyes and neck that seemed to come out of nowhere. He was covering his ears at loud noises, refusing to wear certain clothes because they felt itchy, and clinging tightly to his mum.

It all started after that fever,” she said. “We thought it was just a virus. But now… I don’t recognise him.”

Why Do Symptoms Appear So Suddenly?

Many parents describe the moment their child changed as happening almost overnight. A previously calm or confident child may suddenly develop anxiety, obsessive behaviours, emotional meltdowns, or motor tics.

In PANS, researchers believe the immune response to infection or other triggers may lead to inflammation affecting brain regions involved in behaviour, emotional regulation, and sensory processing. When this occurs, symptoms can appear rapidly rather than gradually.

In my clinical work as a paediatric naturopath in Sydney supporting children with PANS and neuroinflammatory conditions, I see this sudden shift far more often than most people realise.

Common Signs of PANS in Children:

  • Sudden obsessive behaviours or rituals

  • Rage, meltdowns, or intense anxiety

  • Tics, motor changes, or handwriting regression

  • Sleep disturbance or night terrors

  • Toileting regression or food refusal

  • Sensory overload or emotional clinginess

These changes are real - even if test results come back “normal.” They’re the body’s way of saying it needs help.

This is why families often seek a naturopath for PANS who understands immune, gut and nervous system regulation together.

A Naturopathic Perspective on Supporting Children with PANS

In clinic, I take a gentle, holistic approach to PANS. We don’t rush or overload. Instead, we support the child’s nervous system, immune system, and gut - the three systems often in distress beneath the surface. If you would like to understand more about my broader approach to supporting children’s health, you can read more about my work with children here.

We also focus on three crucial goals:

  • Protecting the brain from ongoing inflammatory damage

  • Reducing systemic inflammation to calm the body’s overactive responses

  • Healing the gut to restore the microbiome, calm the immune system, and support brain health

Rather than aiming to suppress symptoms, we explore:

  • How is the nervous system coping?

  • Is there unresolved infection or immune activation?

  • Is the gut inflamed, leaky, or out of balance?

  • Are there nutritional deficiencies or detoxification challenges affecting the brain? In some children, pathways involved in methylation and folate metabolism may influence how the body regulates inflammation and neurological function.

From there, we create a calm, step-by-step plan that meets your child exactly where they are.

Plant-based remedies and nutrients offer gentle, effective support for children with PANS - especially when chosen carefully for their constitution and symptoms.

Supportive care, not aggressive protocols

When supporting children with PANS, gentleness matters.

Rather than listing or layering multiple treatments, I focus on supportive principles that can be tailored over time. These may include nervous system calming, immune modulation, gut support, and nutritional foundations, introduced at a pace the child can tolerate.

Every child’s presentation is different. What matters most is not doing everything, but doing the right things at the right time.

Homeopathy for Whole-Child Healing

Homeopathy can be incredibly helpful for children with PANS - especially when emotional or behavioural symptoms are prominent.

In clinic, remedies are chosen based on the whole picture of the child. In some cases, this may include remedies traditionally used for fear, irritability, or post-illness sensitivity.

Testing for PANS and Underlying Triggers

When needed, we can explore non-invasive testing to help uncover what’s happening beneath the surface. You can learn more about the testing options I offer and how they guide personalised care here. These tools can guide and personalise your child’s care - especially when symptoms are complex or persistent.

When appropriate, testing options may include:

  • Comprehensive microbiome testing – to assess gut bacteria, inflammation, yeast, or parasites

  • Nutrient testing – including iron, zinc, B12, vitamin D, and folate levels

  • Food sensitivity screening – if digestive symptoms or behavioural changes seem food-related

  • HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) – to assess mineral imbalances and heavy metal exposure, which can affect mood, behaviour, and detoxification

Testing isn’t always necessary - but when used thoughtfully, it can help us connect the dots and take the guesswork out of care.

Rhythms That Restore

When a child’s nervous system is overwhelmed, rhythm and predictability become powerful medicine.

Simple daily anchors can help restore a sense of safety, such as:

  • regular meals with adequate protein

  • gentle outdoor time

  • predictable transitions after school

  • screen-free winding down

  • warm baths or foot soaks

  • calm, connected bedtime routines

These rhythms don’t “fix” PANS, but they create the conditions in which healing becomes possible.

A Story from the Clinic

One family I supported had a 10-year-old girl - previously confident, social, and thriving in school. After a mild viral infection, her world shifted dramatically.

She began experiencing sudden, involuntary movements — rapid eye blinking and neck jerks that were both distressing and exhausting. Her once neat handwriting became nearly illegible, and she started avoiding schoolwork she used to enjoy. She developed intense fears, insisting on repetitive rituals like checking locks multiple times before bed, and became extremely sensitive to certain fabrics, refusing to wear clothes that previously posed no issue.

Her parents were bewildered and concerned. "It's like she became a different child overnight," her mother shared.

We focused on calming her nervous system, reducing inflammatory load, supporting gut health, and meeting her emotional needs gently.

Over several weeks, her tics diminished, her anxiety lessened, and her joyful spirit began to reemerge. Her parents reported, "We're starting to see glimpses of our daughter again."

A Gentle Word

If you feel like something has changed in your child — and no one is listening — trust your knowing. You know your child. You know when something’s not quite right.

PANS is real. And while it can feel big and scary, there are gentle, effective ways to support your child’s healing.

You don’t have to do it all at once. You don’t have to do it alone.

Working with a Naturopath for PANS

As a naturopath for PANS, working with children who experience sudden behavioural and emotional changes, my role is to support the body gently while it finds its way back to balance. This includes calming neuroinflammation, supporting immune regulation, restoring gut health, and helping the nervous system feel safe again. I offer PANS-focused naturopathic consultations in Sydney, with online support for families Australia-wide.

PANS in Children – Common Questions

Can a naturopath help with PANS?
Yes. Naturopathic care can support immune regulation, gut health, nervous system calming, and nutritional foundations, which are often key drivers underneath PANS symptoms. Care is gentle, paced, and tailored to your child.

What are early signs of PANS?
Parents often notice sudden anxiety, OCD-like behaviours, emotional volatility, sleep disruption, tics, handwriting changes, sensory sensitivities, or regression after an illness.

Do we need testing?
Not always. When symptoms are complex or persistent, testing can help guide care. Options may include microbiome testing, key nutrient levels, and other investigations based on your child’s presentation.

How long does recovery take?
Every child is different. Some families notice early shifts in sleep and regulation within weeks, while deeper healing often takes months. The focus is steady progress without overwhelming the nervous system.

With warmth and care,
